International Institutions in China s Foreign Policy: The Case of the Shanghai Cooperation Organizat

In 1991 China concluded that it could achieve its global rise by participating in and shaping international multilateral cooperation. In 2021, thirty years after this contention and twenty after China co-established its first international organisation - the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, this book offers a thorough insight into the role of multilateral institutions in China? s foreign policy. The practice of China? s multilateralism is scrutinised through the study of China? s use of the SCO between 2001 and 2013 in its foreign policy towards Central Asia. Through the in-depth analysis of the organisation in this time span, this study defines the main goals of China? s use of multilateralism between the end of the Cold War era and the introduction of the Belt and Road Initiative in 2013.
